Have you seen these ESP32-PICO-V SoCs?

They are an #ESP32 with all required peripherals (crystal, flash, rf filter) in an IC package :o
For $4.25 you can get a square containing 8MB flash and 2MB RAM. That's enough to run Linux I think.
And you essentially just need to connect a battery and an antenna.
