I only saw them on old buildings where the roof had been undisturbed

Often pitched roofs of old hand-made clay tiles (very prevalent in southern england as clay was local and slate wasnt) or roofs of stone flags

House Leeks manage to hang on and thrive where local sedum varieties would get pushed off by rain or snow - sedum tended to grow only where it could be supported by the house leeks, or in blocked gutters i think the sedum was a opportunistic arrival
