Follower count matters, on Nostr, but not the way you think it does.
The ideal isn't to have a gigantic number. The ideal is to have a mid-sized follower list (between 100 and 5000) only containing active, human followers who have lots of other active human followers.
You can currently only achieve this Nostr Nirvana by migrating to a new npub every 6 months to a year. The quality of interactions will go up, because you shake off the bots, the trolls, and the inactives, and the remainder has to consciously and actively decide, if they want to continue to follow you.
This condenses the signal, every migration, and will give you a high WoT score, even though your follower numbers collapse.
