Also there's been extra helpings of mucking about with the text since, as each agenda within the church sought to buttress its own prejudice and worldview. The Pauline texts are a great example, with being broken up now of things written by Paul, things written as Paul in the ancient world custom of writing as tribute to the author, and more conservative authors inserting stuff Paul never said but they wanted to make it seem that he did.
