In theory, yes. When I started using Gentoo only bootstrap binaries were provided, those were the times when just replacing xor ax,ax with mov ax,0 could give you a 20% performance boost on k6-2 CPU — it made a lot of sense. Nowadays optimizing for you microarchitecture would give you what, 2%? 5% at best — and I'd go even for that if that is software I run daily, for stuff I run once a year? Hello no! Even if it takes 15 minutes, it's a waste of computing power. Got a lot of that? Run SETI@Home or whatever shit they do nowadays — mine crypto, train a neural network, whatever…
It might make sense to rebuild Firefox with optimization for my microarchitecture, but something like GIMP? Fuck it, there are better things to do.
That's exactly what I'm talking about: prebuilt binaries that cover 80% of use cases are good enough. They should've done that a decade ago.
