When I started using Gentoo only bootstrap binaries were provided, those were the times when just replacing xor ax,ax with mov ax,0 could give you a 20% performance boost on k6-2 CPU — it made a lot of sense. Nowadays optimizing for you microarchitecture would give you what, 2%? 5% at best — and I'd go even for that if that is software I run daily, for stuff I run once a year? Hello no! Even if it takes 15 minutes, it's a waste of computing power. Got a lot of that? Run SETI@Home or whatever shit they do nowadays — mine crypto, train a neural network, whatever…
It might make sense to rebuild Firefox with optimization for my microarchitecture, but something like GIMP? Fuck it, there are better things to do.
