I use foreshadowing, although it is more like a "hunch" I have while writing the story. I can't explain it properly, I often just "know" I have to put something in a chapter to use it as a nook for a hook later on. I don't know how that happens, it is like future me knowing that I will need it there. Sometimes I of course know why I will need it, but often it is an subconscious thing.
