I'm sure they make sense, but the corner stores (and even big grocery stores) doesn't sell MREs and while I'm sure they're easy to find online but if they're not on your mind you're never going to search them out.
I also believe that a significant portion of the population has really rudimentary skills as far as feeding themself at the best of times. Cereal, junk food, frozen food, take out.
Urban populations aren't used to thinking of nature as a threat.
