The current crackdown on student speech is, I believe, a result of the tax-deductibiity of charitable donations.
In a society like ours, where the very rich take the vast bulk of tax deductions, it drives them to find captive "charities" where they can "donate" money in what is actually an investment. (Donors' kids are guaranteed admission, great parties & facilities, access to top scholars & innovation.)
So you get these billionaire-heavy university boards with billionaire politics.
