C.S. Lewis was on point. I look at my kids growing, and how quickly the year passed by. I get so focused on work and other things and can completely miss sometimes that I should have treasured.
While it drives me crazy being behind in my work I've been making a conscious effort to put it to the side to spend time with my kids. The way they have grown over this year and are growing out of their different stages seems to have picked up speed. My mother told me to never rush getting older because you're only a kid once. That was advice that I held on to and I try to impart on my kids as they rush to be a year older. The trick as a parent is the same, never rush your kids to get older they're only a kid once. My kids have helped to decrease my cynicism for the world. I owe them my time to help prepare them for their adult lives, but also owe them time to spend with them doing fun things for them to just enjoy and be a kid.
Enjoy time with your kids the rest of the year if you can. Whether it be in person, if possible, or over phone calls, skype etc...
