Thanks Flick and yes, the registrar very sympathetically explained why she was asking about the hip replacement. To be honest I wasn't upset by the question, I just didn't know the answer!
Fortunately it is very straightforward settling Dad's estate as most things are jointly held with mum and she is the only beneficiary. It will be more complicated when Mum dies so awful as it is I know that need to prepare for that too.
