I always thought your last name was very Frisian, but didn't know you had actual roots there.
Pretty emotional story indeed.
My dad was an agrarian mechanic and when i was young he often took me with him on Saturdays to do some extra stuff at local farms, repairing machinery and such. On most farms i was welcomed and i got to do all kinds of stuff with the farmer while my dad was working. Great memories!
