I have an an ax200 rev 1a in an older inspiron 1525 and a ax210 in an latitude as well, but fortunately I had no random reboots, neither on 13.2 nor on 14.0 when connecting with wpa to my router here.
wifibox is a workaround and fixed some problems (suspend, speed, reconnect) etc but also posed problems with kdeconnect or my ipp anywhere printer, so I know what you mean by "hacky"
But I'll arranged myself and now settled with iwlwifi.
