With winter hiking, always good to start slow like you are doing to test gear and get comfortable with it. Yes, I strap my snowshoes onto my backpack until I need them. With the steep mountain terrain that I hike, I generally take snowshoes, microspikes, and crampons, unless trail reports indicate otherwise.
