We visited Franz Joseph yesterday. Drove into the glacial valley about 5km then walked to a viewing platform 20 mins in. ( Further access cut off by rock slides and a 2D cutout of a DOC ranger with his hand up)
I should have taken binoculars. The head of the glacier was just visible, although not recognisable, as it was just a rock mass at its foot.
