I've said it before and I'll say it again. If you want your students to join in the classroom conversation, make sure there is a classroom conversation they don't have to start. Bring a friend to the classroom whose job it is to interrupt you. They don't need to do any prep: in fact, it's better if they don't. (Do a wee bit of prep if you want to swap roles from time to time. That's a good way to refresh attention.)
