I was fortunate not to have lost any family or loved ones that day, though several old friends and former colleagues perished in the collapse. And in the years that followed, two close friends succumbed to lingering respiratory illnesses from the ground zero air.

What I remember most vividly were the photocopied missing posters, plastered everywhere. Almost no one was found. They stayed up for days and then weeks and then months, morphing from desperate pleas for information into memorials.
