I think a lot of the bad press for TPU still comes from the notorious NinjaFlex, which was such a pain to print. But improved and FDM specific design plastics and most printers having direct drives, I think it is easier to print it now.
My spool TPU that I have is 3 years old. I bought it with my first printer and we struggled to find it at the time, we had to search for many suppliers. Now I can find TPU everywhere. So there are clearly improvements in what we have now.
