Absolutely! I found Nick Szabo’s writing on this really interesting, and this book contains some really nerdy background too:

Exactly is the story of humanity’s pursuit of precision in engineering. Refreshing to have an author with such passion for his subject, who contextualises the application of great innovations for a layperson.
He covers a timeline of clockmaking, machine tooling, locksmithing, component parts, car manufacturing, lens making thru to the Hubble telescope, and semiconductors. The afterword covering a trip to Japan is a really nice touch too.
This should make you bullish on humanity which is something we all need from time to time. 
It’s interesting that things like time and money, both which are so ubiquitous, are things nobody ever talks about but are so effective in controlling large numbers of people.
