for me personally, the majority of the emotion comes out while writing the lyrics as I'm usually diarising some pain/trauma on that day that causes the lyrics to come out in the first place.
Once the song is done and practiced over and over so that its 'automatic' and ready for recording time, its almost like that whole process was a bunch of therapy sessions and I can just focus on the performance for recording and work on finessing how I want the vocal to sound...
