The tropes that have been appearing in these conspiracy theories — false flags, foreign provocateurs, staged attacks - are very old. They’re common in *movies*, which makes them immediately recognizable, makes them seem perhaps more plausible…but the speed and conviction w/which people across the political spectrum now jump to wild theories & find receptive audiences is disturbing.
