When the Catholic Church spread outside the bounds of the Byzantine Empire, it didn't hand out Bible translations. The understanding of the religion was based on the lives of local saints and heroes. When Buddhism spread to Tibet, they didn't even bother translating the canonical discourses either. The normative discourses of the Buddha don't exist in Tibetan to this day, it was based on the methods they discovered to create personal transformation.
