Despite having a college degree in international relations, I have been confused for the last ten years, and I don't expect clarity to arrive soon.
At the root of my confusion: I don't fundamentally understand how right-wing politics in the USA became so aligned with the ambitions of a Russian dictator. Putin's notional triumphs won't help "Make America Great Again" or advance the Republican dream of Christian-branded fascist oppression of women and minorities.
