It depends what the recent past has been like for me. If I'm burnt out, I'd really just love to stare down an indefinitely long period where I can just do whatever comes to mind at the moment, with nothing hanging over my head I need to worry about.

Give me a bit of that, however, and the boredom or at least lack of direction can get to be nagging. Usually that's when I'll either welcome an outside project, or start crafting a regimen for myself to get SOMETHING done that's bigger than day to day amusement.

Truly not having anything going on can be pretty crushing at the end of the day. Even when I'm looking to be able to just go on long walks without worrying about anything else, the walks ARE the project, be it for fitness or just burning off anxious energy. Even when it's video games, there's the built in goals. And even when it's watching TV or movies, it's working through seasons, or some other list I've composed for myself. Once these structures of goals fall away, it seems only natural to reach out for something on your plate. Man does not live by bread alone...
