I didn’t go on to get my PhD, because there are certain things that will get you black balled in academia. If you actually started working with remote sensor data, you’d understand why.

There are lots of other explanations. Maybe your city got a better warning system? Maybe they got better sensors that trigger for tornadoes that wouldn’t have been detected 10 years ago (this is the case for hurricanes)? Maybe you just have more tornadoes and it has nothing to do with anything other than the nature of the Earth and natural cycles?
