And yes. You're correct about the second part as well. You could add a custom key so you could use say Fn+1 for Ctrl+Shift+F1.
I almost never use the Function keys though. So that's not an issue for me.
It's the same thing with the numpad as well. I would rather buy a separate numpad if required though. I like being able to have my mouse close to the center.
