On the surface and raiding during the day they found they had need of vision again. But for some reason they didn't start accumulating facets in their compound eyes again, instead their vision processing portions of their little ant brains expanded. Ants have some of the largest brains for their body size among insects. Eciton has large brains, even among ants. It's not just that they develop more visual processing, the whole brain is larger.
