LynAlden (nprofile…gmr8) I was just debating over on twitter with people talking about the idea that Bitcoin is a ponzi scheme, and will go to zero (yes it was comments on one of Peter Schiff's posts), and having read Broken Money, I can only conclude that EVENTUALLY there may be something to the theory (much like how there is no "intrinsic" value to beads, wampum, or tobacco, even though for a time they were perfectly fine money for the situations in which they were used). And it dawned on me -- the blockchain, as it is now anyway, relies upon terrestrial Internet. Space travel, particularly of the interstellar variety, would turn Bitcoin into "broken money," at least for the purposes of that space-faring society.
Of course, you're already in the middle of a book, and perhaps I should be exploring this for myself, but it does strike me that an allegory about this future society wherein Bitcoin meets its obsolesence (or at least finds limitations, much like how gold currently has some, but no longer all, of the aspects of money that it once did), could be an interesting way to illustrate the transition between monetary standards that would allow us to see some of our own dynamics, from a bit more of a distance than we normally get to experience.
Throwing it out there in case you're totally addicted to this book writing business these days. I look forward to seeing what you've got on what you've been working on.
