Yes. This is true. ROC claims the mainland, CCP claims ROC. Before it was Capitalist/Nationalist vs Communist, now is more State Authoritarian vs Corporate Authoritarian.
And while HK sans TW maintain the usage of “traditional characters” these still exist in Mainland China - but the idea that perhaps these were a bit over-engineered and simplification could reap significant benefits of general ease and improved madd literacy, was not - in my opinion - entirely unfounded.
