I still think that traveling with a firearm part can be a great move to somewhat reduce risk of loss and make sure that nobody one baggage inspector has unsupervised access to your bag — especially alongside valuable or hard-to-replace gear.
But it can also be incrementally expensive. I would not (just for a random example) try to secure a case containing a firearm using a Master so-called lock. I'd want to use an actual lock, and the price of having those frequently cut can add up, even if you use fancy replaceable shackles so that you're not wasting the lock body every time.
The US just has so many rough edges where public systems are total nonsense or degraded beyond belief. And that's where there's still public infrastructure at all, which is more and more just cops and other systems of control.
