I tend to agree with 's sentiments on this. Commercial software can be beneficial and good, but, ultimately, market entities are incentivized to mistreat the customer/user to the greatest extent allowable, be this due to obstacles like government regulations or market competition. The latter begins to collapse as an obstacle when competition is reduced, such as with the current de facto duopoly on the mobile smartphone market. The only place I can think of that is different is China, where Google services are prohibited and ergo there exists this strange landscape of widespread third-party app stores with phones running de-Googled flavors of Android. This is changing, slowly, though, as the phone manufacturers have gotten into the software market and are starting to "Applefy" themselves, so to speak. Huawei being a great example.
