My over-ear headphones were in the shop for a week and I can confidently say that even the absolute best earbuds are a poor substitute. There are earbud-favoring situations, for sure. But those are the rare exception compared to the sublime autistic joy of having the big bois on my head and the ADHD joy of listening to eccentric podcasts at unreasonable speeds rather than being alone with my thoughts.
