i know at least a few scientists who run their own operations. i guess in some environments, or even countries, it is a lot easier.
I would wish that the independent free scientists at some point become powerful enough to operate their own open education platform, to not just onboard but share knowledge and teach & connect the learners to self organised "earning opportunities", so that it becomes perceived as legit career
