Wow, had my first really broken #debian testing upgrade in a very long time. Did a regular "apt update && apt upgrade", rebooted, and got what is apparently now the Gnome (systemd?) equivalent of a BSOD: "Oh No! Something has gone wrong..." Useless.
Unable to switch to a VT. Normal process for booting into single user mode didn't work.
Ended up on the grub command-line manually specifying a kernel and initrd. Got to a shell, performed a dist-upgrade, and now we're back in business. FUN! #linux
