Maybe the right question is \"can language ever come before symbols?\" and the answer of course is \"yes,\" because language helps us derive new symbols from old ones. I'm sympathetic to the idea that there is a more basic \"picture language\" which we use to manipulate symbols, and that the English language doesn't need to intervene in pure thought. But I have to admit that sometimes I arrive at a thought by just juggling English mnemonics around.",
