It's the same pattern I see all the time: Lots of first level replies + Conversations that branch out from some of these replies (but rarely branch out widely)
Have you tried displaying it like chat messages (starting from the second level of replies)?
Optimizing UX for actual in-thread conversation: 1. Open fascinating post (or any other content type) 2. Pick which conversation to join 3. You entered the chat
