This has been an issue for a while. I posted quite recently about it here (https://mas.to/@tokyo_0/113378601689912523). There's an old suggested fix for it here (https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/22154) that seems destined to gather cobwebs forever. I mentioned it to trumpet@mas.to (npub19vf…lppg) as well, although it sounded as though from an instance admin perspective the posts don't take up much space so there isn't much of a cost driver for it to be addressed. I do think in time it will be a problem for Mastodon, though. (cc Andy Piper (npub13za…8j89))
