that's true. I read a book once called The Prodigal Tongue which deals with the differences between UK and US English. It was very insightful. It actually mentions many of those examples which were originally Britishisms, but changed AFTER Columbus left, and now they're considered Americanisms, even though they were British long before anyone in America spoke English.

It goes to show that "tradition" is subjective.

I even heard once (from a different source) that it's likely that the standard American accent is possibly what Britons used to sound like. :-)
