UK conventions have frequently diverged from tradition though. For example, the -ize verb spellings are traditional, certainly older, and match the Greek origins better. And spelling the wheel casings as "tire" used to be standard in Great Britain, since it's cognate with "attire". It was the usage in Great Britain that changed in the 1700s, not the States.
