Do you remember that the dawn of the social web was information organized by users?

That was the innovation. Prior to it, everything you saw was chosen by an editor. A curator who decided for you using their judgment. It has its place, but it’s also expensive, and slow. And would never scale to user generated content.

The “like” or the “upvote” was a way of letting the “wisdom of the crowd” act like the editor. Small preferences aggregated to recommendations. It’s a way of distributing the cost of curation to many individuals. And it’s absolutely necessary when more content exists and is being created than any human can consider. *With that volume of content it’s literally impossible to manage and organize without an algorithm.* Things would just become a long list of jumbled content. And you would have to wade through the irrelevant and bad content to find anything remotely worth your time.

Algorithms enabled that. Likes enabled that. Zaps are the same, but louder, clearer than a like due to the cost. They both have a place as a tool to wade through every event to find the things worth your time.

The anti algorithm crowd Doesn’t realize what they are saying. Their follow list is an algorithm just a simple one that is transparent and in their control. But their hearts are clearly against manipulative algorithms and there we can agree. You should be empowered to use algorithms that you choose and control to find the stuff worth your time.

Some in The “zaps only” crowd would have you believe that likes are inherently manipulative, some tool in the attention dopamine industrial complex. It isn’t. Those algorithms are not using likes alone anyway, they are watching comments, and length of time on the page, and a bunch of other metrics. To maximize attention for ad revenue. The “like” is not evil, but they can be used for manipulative ends. So can zaps. #grownostr #nostr
