The way I learned to understand Git was to learn how to use a different DVCS and to import the content from Git repository into the one I preferred to use instead. I was only able to understand how Git works by mapping the awful technical writing in the user manual into concepts I understood well in the alternative DVCS that I found much easier to understand.
