Women had entirely different types of power and roles. Women didn't get jury duty, or conscripted. In the US, there were many states where women could vote, long before the constitution was amended federally.
Why do you think women were subservient and dependent? Women didn't take on as many traditional labor jobs, because they didn't have to. And if the worst happened, a husband died and they had little to no other family, like all human beings throughout history, they did what they had to do to survive.
