You get a Tier 5 ship, but outgrow it pretty quick. You really want a tier 6 ship. There are ways to get one Free-to-play, but it can be a bit of a grind at first.
If you can get over that hump, it's smooth sailing from there. You can get a lot from event rewards and mission payouts. New characters on the same account will have a much better time.
