The point of the grid (rather like the internet) is that it forms a mesh so that power can always be routed around a single point of failure. I contend that the grid was so successful in eliminating precarity (except in remote rural areas) that people have largely come to take an almost 100% reliable supply for granted. Nobody knows how it is that power is always there..
