I remember being a small child in East London in the fifties and early sixties and power cuts were a feature of winters as the system was insufficient to deal with nascent demand for electric heating (encouraged to displace coal fires) and everyone buying new fangled appliances like TVs. (This is distinct from the 70s rolling cuts caused by industrial action)...
