you seem sufficiently in touch with your feelings to work through/process these events, albeit it is 'a lot'.

I thought I'd tell you, that I was estranged from my mother for many years before her death. I often wondered how I'd feel. The Christmas two years after her death, the grief hit me like a brick. Seemed to come out of nowhere.

Just to say, sometimes things catch up with you when you least expect... take you unawares.
