Except it's not, not really, not in the medium- to long-term. Cities did fine before commuting. There used to be factories in cities, with workers housing close enough that the factory could blow a whistle when it was time for a shift to come on, and the workers would just walk over and start work.

And people will still buy - it's more and more online, but if you don't work in some sterile, godawful suburb there's probably retail a short walk from your new office, your home office.
