Separating compiler and linker was a brilliant design choice to make is possible to build arbitrarily large programs (1) with O(1) build system resources, and (2) with very small incremental build time.
"Modern" workflows that do CI shit, rm -rf'ing and downloading and rebuilding from scratch every time you make a change, are a bane to productivity, to the environment, and to ability of ordinary ppl to build and hack on stuff.
