Rare lore: Bach’s incredibly famous and popular Toccata and Fugue exists today because a single teenage boy, Johannes Ringk, made a handwritten personal copy — either from Bach’s original or from the personal copy of his teacher, who knew Bach. He kept that copy safe, it was eventually published, and it’s now one of the most important public domain cultural inheritances we have.
