The one problem with the temperate forest idea is winter. It would probably need to be a window box so I could let in freezing air to condition the tank in winter.
With the orchids when I ask orchid people about "what ants go with orchids" they just look at me in horror. They tend to see ants as pests.
Ants only really chew up plants that are too close to their nest. So I think if there were a long tunnel they might not feel like they needed to "weed" the garden.
