This is often coming from a screencap (which *should* be a simple png) opened IN Preview, copied & pasting TO Preview. (Maybe even usually.)
Like, "Oh, I see you copied something that looks like it's an image of a Pixelmator window! Okay, I'll helpfully tell you it came from Pxm!" If I select a copy area that breaks an window frame of a window, THEN it'll copy over. But WHY?? Like, HOW does that make any sense?
